Which one is better for kids, low-fat or whole-fat milk? The world's first study in this regard from Edith Cowan University (ECU) found that high-fat milk is just as beneficial as low-fat milk for kids.

The study, published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests that the current public health recommendations-children over the age of two should consume low-fat milk- might need a revision. Leading the investigation was by Therese O'Sullivan, ECUs associate professor.

The process of study:
Over a period of three-month, 49 healthy children, aged 4 to 6, were randomly selected to receive either high-fat or low-fat dairy products instead of their daily intake. In order to make sure that the purchase price was not a determining factor, dairy products were home delivered in simple packaging for free every two weeks. None of the groups knew whether they were intaking high-fat or low-fat dairy.
To scrutinize the effects of dairy consumption on children, obesity, blood biomarkers, blood pressure, and body composition were comprehensively measured in them for the first time.
Both groups of children took in the same amounts of calories, regardless of what they consumed.
Children who consumed low-fat milk turned to other beverages and foods to make up the difference between the calories intakes. No significant differences were found between the results of the groups’ cardiovascular health and obesity, Professor O'Sullivan said.

Results:
Because of low levels of saturated fat in low-fat dairy products, it had previously been thought that children would benefit from them, avoiding the risk of obesity and heart disease.
However, the overall results of this study suggested that healthy children aged two and over can consume whole-fat dairy products without worrying about obesity or adverse cardio metabolic effects.
Nickel Analysis, a nutritionist in the study, said:” This results make life far easier for parents to choose dairy products and also allow children to consume dairy products based on their individual preferences.”
