Procudan, the only cheese wax producer in Scandinavia, has developed the first fossil-free cheese wax named ProCera Natural.
The patented recipe of ProCera Natural that has been developed by Procudan and tested in collaboration with Scandinavia’s leading dairies, consists of raw materials of natural origin like beeswax.
Tommy H. Pedersen CEO of Procudan explains that it has taken six years to crack the code and make natural ingredients both practical and usable by cheese producers. Moreover, the end goal of the development process was eliminating fossil materials from cheese packaging without having to make changes in the production processes.
Cheese wax has various applications. It is used to mature cheeses, to protect cheeses during transportation, and is also considered an attractive form of retail packaging in many parts of the world. So, Procudan also sees potential in the use of ProCera Natural as a sales packaging that supports the story of the cheese about quality and natural origin. The only available options for cheese packaging until today include packaging that are made of oil industry by-products, in the form of either petrochemical wax or plastic packaging.
From the beginning of the project until today, Procudan tested more than 5,000 different recipes before finally producing some prototypes and variants that covered every customer’s need. All these aspects were tested in Procudan’s test lab and at large dairy production facilities in various locations in Scandinavia. The use of the new product only requires minor adjustments when dairies transition from a traditional cheese wax to this natural variant.
